The Hijab is a general term used to describe the act of Muslim women covering. As an Iranian-American, who chooses not to cover, I have the ability to blend in as a young woman in American society. As I put on the Hijab, I transition into someone that no longer blends in, becoming subject to the stereotypes and expected behaviors of a Muslim woman. The side glances and awkward looks from passing pedestrians only last a few seconds. I use video stills to isolate and emphasize the moment when a spectator reacts to both the hijab and the act of smoking a cigarette while wearing it.
